From Math Avoidance to Confidence: How I Helped a Struggling Student Re-Engage With Math

A case study about overwhelm, missing skills, self-advocacy, and the conditions children need in order to try again.

Every week, Roger arrived at our tutoring session with a longer list of missing assignments.


Roger is not his real name. I have changed his name and omitted identifying details to protect his privacy. His experience, however, reflects a pattern I see in many students who have fallen behind in math.


Roger did not enjoy homework, and he especially did not enjoy math.


Sometimes he lost his assignments accidentally. Sometimes he “lost” them because making the work disappear felt easier than facing it.


He avoided completing math when he was alone, would not let his mother help, and said he did not want to ask his siblings because they were too busy.


From the outside, this could have looked like carelessness, defiance, or a lack of motivation. Sitting across from Roger, I saw something more complicated.


I saw a playful, funny student who was also becoming overwhelmed. I saw a child who wanted to connect but had learned to use silliness, distraction, and sometimes silence when schoolwork felt too difficult.


Most importantly, I saw a student who needed me to look beneath the behavior before I could help him move forward.


Math Avoidance Is the Behavior We See, Not the Whole Explanation

Math avoidance can take many forms.


A student may procrastinate, joke, change the subject, lose materials, refuse help, rush through problems, or become completely silent. Those behaviors do not tell us, by themselves, why the student is avoiding the work.


Research supports taking a closer look. The Vanderbilt University IRIS Center explains that behavior can serve a function, including escaping a difficult task, and that escape-related behavior may begin with an academic skill deficit.


A student may avoid an assignment because the task feels confusing, threatening, exhausting, or impossible to complete independently. That does not mean children never test limits or choose play over work.


Roger certainly preferred playing with his toys to completing a page of math. It means that “he does not want to do it” was not enough information to guide my response.


I needed to understand what made the work so hard to begin and continue.


What I saw: silliness, distraction, missing work, refusal, and silence.


What I suspected: overwhelm, unfinished math learning, difficulty getting started, and a fear that accepting help would expose what he did not know.



What

Our Early Tutoring Sessions Looked Like


Roger loves to play and be silly. When we first started working together, that silliness often became disruptive.


He sometimes brought a new toy or prize to show me and asked whether I would play with him during his three-minute break.


I often said yes, with one clear condition: the toy could stay as long as it did not interfere with learning. If it became too distracting, it would need to be put away.


Some sessions went well. Roger worked, took his planned break, and returned to the lesson.


Other days, he tried everything he could think of to turn work time into playtime.


Occasionally, he refused to do anything except play.


On those days, I reminded him what we needed to accomplish and restated the expectations. Sometimes the toys had to be put away. Sometimes they sat in “time-out” next to me while Roger worked.


Roger did not always like that boundary.


At times, he responded with silence. He might refuse to participate for several minutes, and on especially difficult days, the silence lasted for much of the session.


I stayed calm. Sometimes I needed to be firm, but firmness did not require anger or shame. I reminded him of the rules, then asked what was going on and what was on his mind.


If he answered, we talked through his concern. If he did not, I stopped filling the silence. I let him know gently that I could not understand what was wrong or help him solve it until he was ready to communicate. Then I gave him time.


The boundary remained, but so did the relationship.


A Safe Learning Environment Still Has Boundaries


Creating a safe learning environment does not mean allowing a student to avoid every difficult task. It does not mean that every toy stays on the table, every assignment disappears, or the adult gives up the moment a child becomes uncomfortable.

For Roger, safety meant that he could struggle without being judged.


He could tell me he did not understand. He could be disappointed about putting a toy away without losing my support. He could take a brief, planned break and trust that I

would still help him return to the work.


The limits were predictable:

  • Breaks were short and had a clear ending.

  • Toys were welcome only when they supported, rather than interrupted, the session.

  • I would listen to his concerns, but we would still work toward the learning goal.

  • Silence would not earn punishment, but I would not pretend to know what he needed without communication.


This balance mattered.

Understanding the reason for a behavior is not the same as excusing every behavior. It helps an adult respond to the actual barrier while still teaching responsibility, communication, and appropriate ways to ask for support.



What I Learned When Roger Was Ready to Talk


During our conversations, Roger told me he felt overwhelmed. There was simply too much to do. Every new missing assignment made the list feel larger, and the larger the list became, the harder it was to begin.


We also discovered that some of the difficulty was academic.


Roger struggled with multiplication and multi-step word problems. Those weaknesses affected more than a few isolated questions.


Math is cumulative, so an unfinished skill can make current work much more demanding than it appears.


A multi-step word problem may require a student to understand the language, identify relevant information, select an operation, recall math facts, keep track of several steps, organize written work, and decide whether the answer makes sense.


If multiplication facts are not secure, the student must devote even more mental effort to every stage.


Research on math anxiety also helps explain why this can become a cycle. Worry and negative thoughts can compete for the same limited working-memory resources students need to solve complex problems.


Avoiding the assignment brings immediate relief, which can make avoidance more likely the next time math appears.


In other words, the growing pile of missing work was not just the result of Roger’s avoidance. It was also making the avoidance worse.


I reassured him that I was not there to judge him. There were skills he still needed to learn, and math could become more manageable as we strengthened them. He did not need to hide what he did not know.


Finding the gaps was how I could help.


After those conversations, Roger usually warmed up again. Before long, his playful personality returned, but he was more aware that there was a time for joking and a time for work.


What I Changed in Our Math Tutoring Sessions


Once I better understood what was underneath Roger’s avoidance, I could match the support to the problem.


1. We made large demands smaller


Instead of treating the entire missing-assignment list as one enormous problem, we identified what needed attention first. We broke assignments and multi-step problems into smaller, visible actions.


For a student who is overwhelmed, “finish your math” is not a useful first step. “Open the assignment and read the first problem with me” is concrete and possible.


2. We addressed the missing math skills


I did not focus only on getting that day’s homework submitted. We also worked on the multiplication knowledge and problem-solving processes that made his current assignments difficult.


This aligns with guidance from the What Works Clearinghouse, which recommends explicit and systematic instruction, visual representations, guided practice, corrective feedback, cumulative review, and motivational strategies for students who struggle in math.


When a foundational skill was weak, we slowed down and taught it. When a word problem felt too large, we identified what the question was asking, separated the information, and worked through one step at a time.


3. We kept breaks brief, predictable, and purposeful


Roger could still enjoy his three-minute break. Play was not the enemy. In fact, it could help him reset and preserve the connection that made learning possible.


The important part was that the break had a boundary. It was a pause within the session, not a way to make the lesson disappear.


4. I made it safer to admit confusion

Students cannot receive useful support if they feel they must hide every gap. I

repeatedly reminded Roger that not knowing something yet was not a reason for embarrassment. It was information we could use.


Instead of asking only, “Do you understand?” I paid attention to where he became quiet, playful, or stuck. Then we worked on more specific language: “I do not understand this step,” “Can you show me how to start?” or “Can we break this into smaller parts?”


5. We practiced responsibility with support


I did not complete Roger’s work for him. I provided enough structure for him to participate successfully, then encouraged him to take more ownership as his skills and confidence grew.


Effective scaffolding follows a gradual progression: I model, we practice together, the student tries with support, and eventually the student works more independently.


The goal is not permanent dependence on a tutor. The goal is to help the student build the skills needed to manage learning with increasing independence.


How Roger Responded


Roger is still Roger. He is still silly, fun, and eager to play. Success did not require changing his personality.


What changed was his ability to manage that playfulness during lessons. He is less likely to let it take over the entire session. He is getting better at telling me when he does not understand and asking for help before frustration turns into complete avoidance. When a task feels too large, he is increasingly able to work with me to break it into smaller steps.


As his math skills have grown, so has his confidence. As his confidence has grown, he has become more willing to engage.


He is also learning how to manage his workload more independently and is less likely to avoid every assignment that feels difficult.


Progress has not been perfectly linear. There are still playful days, reluctant moments, and skills that require more practice. That is normal. The meaningful change is that Roger now has more ways to respond than disappearing, distracting, or shutting down.

He is learning that he can say, “I need help.”


What This Experience Taught Me


The goal was never simply to get Roger to do math.


The goal was to create conditions in which he felt safe enough to engage with something he had learned to avoid. That required patience and connection, but it also required structure, honest expectations, and direct teaching.


Roger needed to know that I would not judge him for unfinished learning. He also needed to know that I would not be distracted indefinitely from helping him learn.


He needed breaks, but he also needed help returning from them. He needed reassurance, but he also needed explicit instruction in multiplication and multi-step problem solving.


No single strategy created the change. Progress came from repeatedly matching support to the barrier in front of us.


What Parents Can Take From Roger’s Story


If your child jokes, stalls, loses work, refuses help, or becomes silent when math appears, begin with observation rather than a conclusion.


Ask yourself:

  • What type of assignment was given just before the behavior began?

  • Is the work too difficult, too long, too unclear, or too demanding to complete independently?

  • Does my child do better when someone helps with the first step?

  • Are there foundational skills, such as multiplication or number sense, making current work harder?

  • Can my child explain what kind of help they need?

  • What conditions make successful engagement more likely?


You do not have to remove every expectation. Instead, reduce the barrier without removing the learning goal.


You might read the directions together, cover part of the page, write down the steps, begin one problem collaboratively, or offer a short break with a clear return plan.


If your child’s distress is severe, persistent, or affecting daily functioning beyond academics, consider involving the appropriate members of your child’s support team.


A teacher or special education team can address school-based needs, while a pediatrician or qualified mental health professional can help when anxiety, emotional distress, or broader concerns require clinical support.


Tutoring can complement those services, but it does not replace them.

When Specialized Math Tutoring May Help


Parents often contact me after homework has become a recurring conflict and their child is falling farther behind despite everyone’s effort.

  • regularly avoids or shuts down during math;

  • has a growing list of missing assignments;

  • understands with support but cannot begin alone;

  • struggles with foundational skills such as multiplication, fractions, or number sense;

  • becomes overwhelmed by multi-step work;

  • needs structured practice asking for help and managing frustration.

A child may avoid math because of missing foundational skills, anxiety, overwhelm, working-memory demands, difficulty beginning, unclear directions, low confidence, or an assignment that feels too large. The behavior tells us the task is difficult to approach, but observation is needed to understand why.


Can a child understand math and still refuse to do it?

Yes. Understanding a concept is only one part of completing an assignment. A student must also begin, organize materials, remember steps, manage frustration, sustain attention, and tolerate mistakes. Support should be matched to the specific barrier.

Not when breaks are planned and structured. A short break can help a student regulate and return with more capacity. The break should have a clear beginning and end, and the adult should help the child return to an achievable next step.


How do you build math confidence in a struggling student?

Confidence grows through supported success. Students need instruction at the right level, opportunities to understand rather than guess, permission to make mistakes, and gradually increasing responsibility. Encouragement matters, but it is most powerful when paired with real skill growth.

Consider additional support when math avoidance is frequent, foundational gaps continue to interfere with grade-level work, missing assignments are accumulating, family homework support is not working, or your child’s confidence is declining.
